Has anyone used and implemented the RightSpot pH waived testing device before?
Our hospital is exploring the use of this waived test.
The rightspot pH waived test is used to ensure that NG tubes are placed properly in the stomach. You can aspirate out the gastric fluid to confirm the acidity of the liquid and be confident that it is in the stomach as opposed to in the lung or somewhere it shouldn't be.
The gold standard is x-ray but the rightspot pH is used for continual confirmation.
Can someone share their hospital's practice for the use of the pH testing for the confirmation of NG tube placement. If you use the RightSpot pH indicator - are there any issues i should be aware of?
We did deploy this device two years ago. It is currently used in our NICU and PICU areas. There are no negatives and it saves some of our smallest patients additional X-Rays. We have the nursing units perform monthly QC on the devices using 4.01 and 7.00 pH buffers.
We currently use this device. We like the closed system. More expensive than just pH paper but it is FDA approved and waived. Be careful if the patient is on a continuous feed or medications as those interfere with reading, back up methods are a must and good education/training on the device. Has reduce the amount of radiographs.
