Does anyone have oversight on their Free Standing Emergency Departments?
How do you handle critical values for POC devices that are unsolicited?
We have our critical values come with a common that “ This critical lab test was not called. result directly available to healthcare provider using pint of care testing instrumentation”.
On our last survey, our inspector did not like this.

I wanted to get clarification on the situation.
Is the RN or the provider using the point of care device?
If the provider is using the point of care device - critical notification is not necessary as the loop is already closed.
When an RN runs the point of care device and there is a critical result - critical results must be documented including who they spoke to and readback.
Our providers in our OR do not document criticals as the only users in our OR are providers.
If the issue is nurses not documenting criticals, you should document the instances and follow up with them and their PCD but you as a lab must create the policy and enforce it.
